Survey Shows Province Feels Safe
July 7, 2005
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians appear to be less fearful of crime than other Canadians. That according to a new survey released today by Statistics Canada.
71 per cent of people surveyed in this province said they were very satisfied with
their personal safety, while 28 per cent were somewhat satisfied. 83 per cent
said they were not worried about taking public transit at night, compared to less
than half of people in Manitoba. 23 per cent of people surveyed in this province
and Quebec felt that neighbourhood crime had increased over the past five years.
Joyce Hancock of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women says the numbers don't taken into account personal safety when it comes to domestic violence.
